“And none of you, our readers who are mostly automotive experts, aren’t even remotely qualified! And to work for us, you have to move to NYC, a place where private car ownership is frowed upon and costs 10x more than a normal city!
We’re looking for people with journalism experience and research skills to write about cars! And the best part? You don’t have to know anything about cars initially to be considered!”
Yeah. Sure. Great. Maybe if we got a little more focus on getting more real car people in over there, we’d get content more like we did years ago.
Here’s a better idea, how about giving readers a chance to write something of substance, if you’re going to tell the readers your hiring. And then pick a few people to write part time remotely as a temporary solution. Hell, Jeremy Clarkson got his job by ranting on camera about how miserable the 2CV is as a car.
But no. Let’s get some more generic journalists and just plug them into writing positions wherever open, regardless of whether or not they’re qualified IN THE SUBECT.

I’d totally volunteer to write for Jalopnik. They should fill those empty spaces with reader-created content...as Kinja was created for such a thing, yes?
Besides, who the heck wants to board the sinking ship that’s Gawker Media? That’s like getting a job as a Mitsubishi salesperson, when you could work literally anywhere else.

It costs a lot to live here. SF is more expensive, as are Tokyo and Seoul, but you earn somewhat more, and that makes living here or there possible. Jalopnik probably doesn’t pay an entry level writer enough to live here, so although I’d love to write for them, I can’t afford it. And I haven’t owned a car since I sold the ‘97 SHO in 2001, so I’m not much of a car guy anymore.

Just you, a bunch of “maintenance challenged” roads, and somewhere north of 8,400,000 other people all trying to get to the same place at the same time! Plus, the people have that charming “the whole country is (or should be) exactly like Manhattan” attitude that the rest of us find so endearing!

jalopnik is more of a blog, and its “writers” more bloggers than journalists.
if they’re just re-reporting what other enthusiasts have already written, you’d just need the expereince/skills to be a web-writer/blogger.

They already have a number of remote writers on their staff. The people they lost were New York-based and handled duties that could only be done in person, not via the internets. It makes sense their replacements would have to be in NY as well.
Also, not sure who on the current roster you think isn’t a car person, but I can’t think of anyone among them who I’d say doesn’t love cars.

That front page article was so hard to read to the end. It seems they think very highly of themselves. Based on what I’ve read on the front page, the only requirements are to think up clickbait headlines and regurgitate press releases.

Think about it this way: Lots of people know about cars. Lots of people who know about cars are also terrible writers.
Maybe a good writer can learn about cars more easily than a car lover can learn about writing. Or at least faking knowledge of cars is easier than faking being a good writer. Anybody can wikipedia car stuff. But you can’t just google how to write well.

I’m sorry, why did you read that and think we’re not after qualified car experts? Or passionate car people? “Car evangelists,” as I put it. Normal people wouldn’t want to work for Jalopnik, and I wouldn’t have them anyway.
I’m looking for experienced writers who are knowledgeable and passionate about cars and can work easily in a newsroom operation where constant grinding is the norm. I want you readers to apply, too; it’s why I wrote the post.
The jobs are in NYC because that’s where our video operation is, and if you’re hired you’ll be doing a lot of that. Plus, there are scores of car people in New York, including car owners. (For everyone else, there’s the Manhattan Classic Car Club, I suppose.)
Also:
Here’s a better idea, how about giving readers a chance to write something of substance, if you’re going to tell the readers your hiring. And then pick a few people to write part time remotely as a temporary solution.
I told you I was looking for contributors and to email me with ideas.
And it’s *you’re hiring, not *your hiring.

I really wish I could, but I’m still in school. If I had a weekend post, or something like that, I would sign up. If you see my small articles, you might agree with me. Ever since I knew about cars, I wanted to know more, so I know about every kind of car there is, and I also took a class this year in high school called Automotive 1. I have learned the basics of working on cars now. I would love to join, but I couldn't do it full time.

Just correcting the record! The last thing we want is for everyone to think that the only way you could write about cars, or enjoy cars, is to have a ton of money up front – preferably from a trust fund.
We want people from all backgrounds, and that means reassuring people that yes, if you work here, you’ll be able to drive, write, and eat. I never would’ve taken the leap myself if I didn’t think it was possible.

Not going to apply as I don’t fit the required description... Still sent a message to Patrick, reminding him that a coverage of all the awesome car related things in this country could, I think, be a good addition to Jalopnik... Doubt I’ll get an answer though. Kind of sucks, with a little budget, I think I could report and cover great stuff here...

Honestly, the “moving to NYC” bit is what ruins quite a bit of Jalopnik’s content. What percentage of writers do you have are already in or around NY state? We need something else... Everything is written in house, using press release pictures... When you send someone out of office to cover an event, I feel like it often flops, focusing more on the writers/journalists trying to entertain us, instead of making us drool over cars or cool driving. Yes, driving. There is no “driving” on Jalopnik anymore also... Do you remember when Mike Spinelli and his hair would go into long descriptions of his emotions when behind the wheel of his MRS or at the wheel of a 911? Where is all that? Where did it go??
Yes, I’m desappointed by Jalopnik recently. I feel that it has lost some of its soul to press reports and repost of youtube videos/police chases. The new trend being to find a picture of a car and write about how cool it is. 10 minutes fill-up articles. It’s more and more becoming just “another car website”.
There are so many events to go to, so many tuner shops to check out, so many collectors to visit.
I still check out the front page daily because I’m used to it, because I do like some writers and some stuff you guys do is still pretty good and interesting... but not like it used to. I know I sound like a grand-pa, but it’s just how I feel.
I hope this type of journalism at least gets you to live decently in one of the most expensive city in this world.
I’ve sent another email to Patrick to remind you guys that if you need some different passion-driven contents from the other side of the globe, I’m here and would be happy to help out. I doubt I’ll get an answer, but I truly think I could be useful. ;)

Hum... Tokyo would actually be A LOT cheaper than NYC. You can actually rent your own appartment in Tokyo for 600 to 1000$ per month.
Even anglophone websites have decent deals...
http://apartments.gaijinpot.com/en/rent/view/3… : 22m2 for 600$
And for 2200$ a month, which gets you a shitty 1 room appartment in the Bronx, you get 45m2 in Shinjuku
http://apartments.gaijinpot.com/en/rent/view/3…
Keep in mind it’s focusing on a very expensive part of Tokyo, you can find much cheaper places if you get out of center Tokyo and just around it, within a 30 minute public transport commute, you’ll pay a lot less than that.
Going out is also a lot cheaper than in NYC. So is food and well, everything really :)
Tokyo is only an expensive city if you’re a tourist.

if you want to be able to afford a decent apartment and be able to have enough money for a hobby on top of school loans/rent then no. your best bet would be to live in jersey city and commute and even there is expensive. I live in bloomfield NJ which is a few miles north of jersey city but still very much in the ridiculous rent area of jersey. i rent the basement of a house for $900 a month wich is cheap as hell considering most of my coworkers spend 12-1300 a month for a studio.

$2675 gets us a decent 1 BR at 74th and Amsterdam ... but we’ve paid on time since 2001, so that’s probably artificially low. Landlords love us (we don’t complain and pay on time) so we got this thing for as long as we want it. I want to buy it, SigOther says it is too small, so I soldier on, looking for that dream apartment.

Yeah that is very low for NYC... a friend had an appartment around your place too and she was paying 3500$ a month for what was something like a 45m2 1 bedroom... Crazy expensive! In Montreal I had a 3 bedroom with basement and parking spot for 1300 USD... :)
